The Eastern Plaguelands are the Scourge-infested remains of the human Kingdom of Lordaeron, situated to the south of the Ghostlands in the Eastern Kingdoms. The area was once dotted with rural farms and quaint villages, with the local government situated around the capital city of Stratholme. However, before the outbreak of Third War, Arthas single-handedly slaughtered the townsfolk of Stratholme after discovering that had been infected with the Plague of Undeath. The region later fell with the rest of Lordaeron, and the plague spread through the kingdom turning the once verdant farmland into blighted soil. The lich Kel'Thuzad now rules the remaining soldiers of the Scourge from Stratholme. They continue to roam the land, which is now corrupted with giant fungal growths and polluted with a thick orange mist. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Crusade fight valiantly to reclaim the region from their settlement at Tyr’s Hand.
While the soundscape opens with a haunting atmospheric vocal line, the music of this blighted region is dominated by a dirge of ambient synthesiser pads. The resulting soundscape is an unsettling howl of the tortured victims that inhabit the Eastern Plaguelands, with sinister brass stabs emerging at random. There is no discernible melody, harmony or conventional instrumentation; any hint of a traditional instrument is broken and twisted by electronic effects. Metallic percussion and broken woodwind fragments are occasionally heard, manipulated and distorted almost beyond all recognition. This creates a remarkable parallel with the land itself, which has been also been manipulated and distorted by the Plague of Undeath.
