Felwood forest is a corrupted woodland region that lies between Darkshore and Mount Hyjal in Kalimdor. The once vibrant and idyllic forest was protected by the night elf demi-god Cenarius for thousands of years before it was defiled by the Burning Legion, which forever tainted the local wildlife and vegetation. With no-one to tend to the forest, it deteriorated into a haunted region of cursed vales, noxious waterways and possessed creatures. Felwood remains largely abandoned, with no discernable villages or cities to speak of, and all attempts by the night elves to restore the land to its former glory have failed. However, several small encampments have been established by the Horde, Alliance and Cenarion Circle to ensure safe passage through the region for brave travellers attempting to reach Hyjal Summit.
Felwood's sonic landscape is understandably dissonant and ghostly, making extensive use of a plethora of haunting synthesiser pads and electronically-manipulated bells scattered throughout the score. The metallic tones in particular are subjected to reverberation and reverse effects to create an eerie atmosphere of darkness and corruption. Unstable string harmonies and brief woodwind melodies occasionally emerge from the thick swamp of synthesisers, and five-note repeated melody is incessantly repeated. Pan flutes use techniques such as overblowing and flutter-tonguing to create harsh, distorted tones to reflect the defiled environment. A booming percussion line can also be occasionally heard. The creatures that dwell within the twisted trees of Felwood have regressed to their most primitive, savage instincts. The use of these harsh flute timbres and percussion produces a 'prehistoric' sound, which reflects the devolution of Felwood's cursed wildlife.
As the music progresses, the violins begin produce an abrasive, piercing sound through use of harmonics; a technique commonly heard in horror movie scores. The resultant sound is a lingering, maddening screech, which acts as the perfect complement to the indeginous creatures that have been driven mad by Felwood’s demonic curse.
